BLUE CHEER

Blue Cheer is an American rock band that was formed in California in the late 1960s. They are often credited with being one of the pioneers of heavy metal, although they also incorporated elements of blues, psychedelic rock, and hard rock into their music. Despite never achieving the widespread recognition enjoyed by other bands of their time such as Led Zeppelin or The Who, Blue Cheer remains a cult favorite among fans of late 60s rock and metal. Blue Cheer was formed in 1966 by guitarist Leigh Stephens, bassist Dickie Peterson, and drummer Paul Whaley. Their first album, "Vincebus Eruptum", was released in 1968 and is considered a classic of psychedelic heavy rock. The album featured covers of Eddie Cochran’s "Summertime Blues" and Mose Allison’s "Parchman Farm", as well as several original tracks. The band's sound was characterized by loud, distorted guitars, heavy bass, and pounding drums, and their live shows were famous for being incredibly loud – so much so that they were often credited with causing structural damage to venues. Despite the success of their first album, the band struggled to maintain their momentum. They underwent several lineup changes and released several albums throughout the 1970s, but were never able to recapture the success of "Vincebus Eruptum". The band eventually disbanded in 1979, but reformed in 1990 with Peterson as the only original member. Blue Cheer's legacy as pioneers of heavy metal is undeniable. Their use of distortion and feedback, as well as their preference for loud and heavy riffs, paved the way for the eventual development of heavy metal as a distinct genre. They were also an influence on later bands such as Black Sabbath, who are often credited with being the quintessential heavy metal band. However, Blue Cheer's influence extends beyond just the heavy metal genre. Their incorporation of blues and psychedelic elements into their music helped to popularize these genres as well. Their use of loud, distorted guitars inspired countless other bands in the rock and metal spheres, and their emphasis on rhythm and groove has been noted as an influence on funk and soul music. Despite never achieving the same level of mainstream success as some of their contemporaries, Blue Cheer remains a beloved band among music fans. Their unique sound and uncompromising attitude towards volume and distortion have left an indelible mark on the history of rock and roll, and their influence can still be heard in the music being made today.
