Description:Don Braden may be best known for his work with television funnyman Bill Cosby, but his musical talents go far beyond this arena. Having replaced Branford Marsalis in Wynton's combo and having appeared with Betty Carter, Roy Haynes, Dr Lonnie Smith, Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams and the Mingus Big Band it is clear that his abilities on the tenor sax are formidable. Braden is smooth and has killer chops, George Colligan plays supportive piano, and Cecil Brooks III has a propulsive style on drums which nicely compliments Joris Teepe's big robust bass sound. But the hero of the date is Braden himself. Whether lingering effortlessly on ballads or burning down the town, Braden's playing is a model of tasteful energy and disciplined brilliance.
Recorded at Tedesco Recording Studios, Paramus, NJ, on January 2, 2008
"Gentle Storm" is an expressive jazz CD by saxophonist Don Braden, released on the respected label HighNote Records. The album presents Braden's hallmark combination of lyrical melodies, harmonically rich improvisations and a warm, full-bodied saxophone tone. Across the program, he balances elegant ballads, modern swing and grooving mid-tempo pieces, creating a coherent musical journey that feels both sophisticated and accessible. The arrangements leave plenty of space for interaction within the ensemble, allowing the rhythm section and soloists to shine while always serving the song. "Gentle Storm" is ideal for listeners who appreciate contemporary straight-ahead jazz that remains deeply rooted in the tradition yet speaks with a clear, personal voice.

HighNote Records is an independent jazz label known for its high artistic standards and audiophile-oriented productions. The company has built a strong reputation by working closely with established and emerging jazz artists and giving them the freedom to realize their musical vision without compromise. Releases on HighNote typically stand out through careful recording quality, tasteful artwork and a catalogue that focuses on timeless, musician-driven jazz rather than short-lived trends. With "Gentle Storm," HighNote once again underlines its role as a reliable address for demanding jazz listeners.
