The Monks were formed in 1964 by four America GI's who were stationed in Germany. Dressed in black robes and with tonsure haircuts, the band sounded and looked like no one else and made many continental European television appearances. Their keyboard heavy songs with mountains of reverb, churchy fills and staccato rhythms have been popular in the music underground since their debut album Black Monk Time was released in 1966. Artists to have acknowledged the Monks as an influence include: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the White Stripes, the Vaccines, Henry Rollins, the Fuzztones, the Beastie Boys and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, as well as the Fall. In 1999, the legendary Cavestomp Festival brought the band together for their first show since 1967. Legendary music scribe Byron Cooley writing for Spin Magazine called the show 'Transcendent'. Here is the complete 16 song set to enjoy forever.
