Nocturnus stands out as a pioneering and influential death metal band. Formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987 by guitarist Mike Davis, Nocturnus incorporated sci-fi and space themes into their music, creating a sound that was both unique and progressive.
The band released their first album in 1990, entitled “The Key.” The album was a critical success and caught the attention of many within the metal community. Nocturnus’ sound fused traditional death metal tropes with avant-garde keyboard and synthesizer to create a futuristic and atmospheric sound. The sound was not just about musical experimentation, but the themes and lyrics were also focused on exploring futuristic concepts.
The Key had an almost cinematic quality to it, with songs like “Lake of Fire” and “Andromeda Strain” transporting listeners to otherworldly places. The album’s production was top-notch, something that many death metal albums lacked at the time. Overall, Nocturnus’ contribution to the death metal world is still celebrated today, and their sound continues to inspire modern-day metal bands.
However, as with many metal bands, Nocturnus had its share of problems. They released two more albums over the next few years, but internal disagreements eventually lead to the band’s dissolution in 1993. Despite their short run, Nocturnus left an indelible mark on death metal, influencing many bands that came after them.
In 2013, Mike Davis and the band’s original drummer formed a new version of Nocturnus called “Nocturnus AD.” While the band’s name may have changed, they have continued to produce music that is faithful to the original Nocturnus’ sound, while also striving to innovate and progress.
With their uniquely forward-thinking sound that blends sci-fi elements, keyboard, and synthesizers with traditional death metal, Nocturnus has left an outstanding legacy within the death metal community. Their groundbreaking music is still celebrated and admired today, and it’s evident that their influence has helped shape the genre into what it is today.
