Description:Cosmic Funk by Lonnie Liston Smith, released 30 April 2014, includes the following tracks: "Beautiful Woman", "Peaceful Ones" and more. This version of Cosmic Funk comes as a 1xCD. -
Digitally remastered edition of this 1974 album. Having made his name as a sideman for Art Blakey, Raahsan Roland Kirk and Gato Barbieri, among others, Lonnie Liston Smith was keen to make his first album as a leader once he began working with Miles Davis. Signing with Flying Dutchman, he formed his own group, the Cosmic Echoes. His first album Astral Traveling performed well and he was invited back to make Cosmic Funk. This is a conscious development of the space-influenced Jazz that Lonnie was starting to play. Mixing Funk rhythms, percussive elements and modal themes, it could be termed this as Spiritual Jazz, but it moves beyond simple characterization. The album also adds the distinctive voice of Lonnie's brother Donald to the band for the first time.
Originally released in 1974 Made in the EU
"Cosmic Funk" on CD by Lonnie Smith Liston is a deep, space-tinged jazz-funk journey that captures the boundary-pushing spirit of the early 1970s. Built around swirling organ grooves, earthy rhythm-section work and exploratory horn arrangements, this album fuses soul-jazz warmth with cosmic, psychedelic overtones. The tracks unfold in extended, hypnotic jams that balance tight, driving funk with open-ended improvisation, making it as rewarding for close listening as it is for late-night moods. Liston's command of harmony and texture gives the music a distinctive, otherworldly glow while still remaining grounded in groove and melody. This CD edition offers an immersive way to experience a key chapter in the evolution of jazz-funk and spiritual jazz, appealing to collectors and curious newcomers alike.
