This CD presents Joaquín Rodrigo's two most beloved guitar concertos: the "Concierto de Aranjuez" and the "Fantasia para un gentilhombre", in a refined and idiomatic interpretation. Star guitarist Pepe Romero brings exceptional warmth, virtuosity and stylistic authority to these works, supported by the elegant, transparent orchestral direction of Sir Neville Marriner. The recording highlights the lyrical intensity of the famous Adagio from the Concierto de Aranjuez, with its haunting cor anglais and guitar dialogue, as well as the dance-like charm and baroque inspiration of the Fantasia para un gentilhombre, based on themes by Gaspar Sanz. The sound image is clear, well balanced and natural, allowing the guitar to shine while preserving the full orchestral color.
Pepe Romero is internationally recognized as one of the great classical guitarists of his generation, admired for his noble tone, technical brilliance and deep musical insight, especially in the Spanish repertoire. He has built an extensive discography and is widely associated with reference interpretations of Rodrigo's works. Sir Neville Marriner, one of the most recorded conductors in history, was renowned for his stylistic clarity and tasteful phrasing, qualities that perfectly complement Romero's expressive playing on this album. Together they create readings that are both emotionally compelling and stylistically informed, making this disc an excellent choice for both newcomers to classical guitar and seasoned collectors.
