Description:Digitally remastered edition of this 1973 album. Gryphon was one of the more unusual of the folk-rock groups to come out of England in the 1970s, mostly because they didn't confine their musical genre-melding to folk-rock. Spawned at the Royal College of Music, they started out making a name for themselves in folk-rock, but their classical training and their approach to composition, recording, and performance soon took them into the much bigger field of progressive rock, and eventually had them playing gigs in front of arena-size audiences. This, their debut album features more traditional sounding material than later years and with 2015 seeing the reformation of the band, 2016 is bound to be a Gryphon year as they are already set to headline many festivals throughout the year.

The album "Gryphon" on CD presents the self-titled debut of the British band Gryphon, a group renowned for their unique fusion of early music, folk and progressive rock. Characterised by acoustic instrumentation, recorder, bassoon, crumhorns and delicate vocal harmonies, this recording offers an imaginative journey that sounds both archaic and surprisingly fresh. The tracks move between instrumental dance tunes inspired by Renaissance and medieval traditions and more song-oriented pieces, always marked by playful arrangements and great attention to detail. The CD edition is an ideal way to experience the roots of Gryphon's distinctive sound that later made them a cult name within the progressive and folk-rock community.

Gryphon themselves are a British band formed in the early 1970s, known for blending historical musical elements with modern composition techniques. They quickly earned a reputation for their virtuoso playing, unusual instrumentation and witty, narrative arrangements. Over the years they developed from an almost purely acoustic outfit into a more rock-oriented progressive band, performing at important venues and touring with some of the major names of the era. Their originality, technical skill and stylistic courage have secured them a lasting place in the history of progressive and folk-influenced rock.

The CD is released by Talking Elephant, a specialist label that focuses on folk, classic rock and related genres. The company is known for lovingly curated reissues, archival releases and carefully compiled editions that preserve and highlight important contributions to the folk and rock canon. With a clear passion for high-quality catalogue titles and niche classics, Talking Elephant has built a strong reputation among collectors and fans who value authenticity, good sound and respectful presentation of historically important recordings.

This edition of "Gryphon" is therefore not just a simple re-release of an album, but a carefully presented document of a band whose creativity and instrumental prowess still fascinate today. For listeners who appreciate acoustic textures, historically tinged melodies and adventurous arrangements, this CD offers a rich, atmospheric listening experience that opens a window onto one of the most distinctive ensembles of the 1970s progressive and folk-rock scene.
