| Description: | Laughs Last is an album by Circus Devils, released in 2017. The album is a pop CD. - 2017 collection. Robert Pollard's freak-rock trio Circus Devils (2001 - 2017) says farewell with a pair of simultaneous releases. On Laughs Last, Pollard and the Tobias brothers romp breathlessly through multiple styles, starting off with the brash hotdogger, "Get Out Of My Way When I'm In Town." Along the way we're treated to the R.E.M. inflected "I Do the Nixon," the organ-fuzz stomper "Teenage Rooster," and the defiantly conventional "Crucified by The British Press." Full of high humor and low drama, Laughs Last is the bold exclamation point at the end of Circus Devils' 16-year run. Circus Devils was founded in 2001 by Robert Pollard, best known as the lead singer and songwriter of the Dayton, Ohio, band Guided by Voices. The band consists of Pollard (vocals and lyrics), Todd Tobias (music and production), and Tim Tobias (music). Circus Devils employs a wide spectrum of musical styles ranging from acid rock to ambient soundscapes. On the band's web site, the music is described as "garage-prog, or "art rock made by cave men.""Laughs Last" on CD captures Circus Devils in their enigmatic, cinematic rock mode, blending darkly surreal atmospheres with sharp, hook-laden songwriting. Angular guitars, off-kilter rhythms and dreamlike lyrics create a listening experience that feels like a soundtrack to a strange, nocturnal movie. Tracks move fluidly from brooding, slow-burning pieces to explosive bursts of noise-rock energy, always wrapped in an experimental yet accessible sound. The production favors rich textures and a slightly lo-fi edge, underlining the band's underground art-rock aesthetic and making this CD a rewarding listen for fans of adventurous indie and psychedelic rock.
Circus Devils is a long-running project led by Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), known for its prolific and highly influential role in US indie rock. With numerous albums and a reputation for fearless experimentation, Circus Devils has carved out a cult following for their blend of art-rock, prog, noise and surreal pop. Pollard's distinct voice and collage-like songwriting approach, together with the band's inventive soundscapes, have earned them respect among critics and dedicated fans who appreciate boundary-pushing rock music.
The CD edition of "Laughs Last" offers the album in a durable, collector-friendly format, ideal for listeners who value physical media, linear listening and curated artwork. The sequencing is designed to be heard from start to finish, inviting the listener into a cohesive, mood-driven journey rather than a mere collection of songs. This makes it particularly appealing to those who enjoy immersive albums that reveal new details with every spin.
