A transformative force in music, dance and the visual arts, the Ballets Russes was founded in Paris in 1909 by the visionary impresario Serge Diaghilev. Born 150 years ago, he created a brilliant artistic fusion with the most innovative composers, dancers, choreographers and designers of his time. In 1913, the Ballets russes changed musical history when it gave the sensational premiere of Stravinskyâ??s Le Sacre du printemps.
Encompassing epoch-making works and rarities awaiting rediscovery, this kaleidoscopic 22-CD set contains the vast majority of Ballets russes scores that have been recorded. Among the composers are Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Dukas, Schmitt, Poulenc, Milhaud, Sauguet, Auric, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Glazunov, Prokofiev, Liadov, Balakirev, Tcherepnin, Falla and Strauss.
