Description:Rare 1970s British jazz from Joy: Chris Francis, James Dvorak, Frank Roberts, Ernest Mothle, Keith Bailey, featuring 2 extended tracks, new texts and photos. Remastered from the original tapes by Keith Bailey and Lawrence Czoka. With insert featuring new pics by acclaimed photographer Jak Kilby, it's the first ever reissue of this cult British jazz LP. The mid-70s should be seen as a vibrant and fecund period for British jazz includingSpear, Molongo, The Brotherhood of Breath, Keith Tippett and Elton Dean's groups and and others were bands such asThe Quintet (Joy's direct precursor),Keith Bailey's Orbit, Chris Francis' Naima, Maggie Nichols' Voice, Dave Defries' Lemonspiel, Gary Windo's I Dogu featuring Frank Roberts, Quincicasm, Landscape, Harry Becket's Joy Unlimited, Isotope - all working with the punk ethic and generating a special scene. Joy were part of this: there was undoubtedly a buzz around this hip young multi-cultural band featuring London musicians from South Africa, The Caribbean, The US and UK. The LP that came out in 1976 only increased the buzz: one of the best of the bands playing in the contemporary post- bop style but with their own material. -

"Joy" is a CD release by the artist Joy on the independent label Shrimper, known for its roots in lo-fi, indie and experimental music. This album offers an intimate, unpolished sound in which subtle melodies, fragile vocals and understated arrangements come together to create a very personal listening experience. The production deliberately preserves a raw edge, making the songs feel direct and close, as if they were recorded in a small room just for the listener. Fans of understated indie and home-recorded aesthetics will find a wealth of detail in the quiet dynamics, shifting moods and restrained instrumentation that reward repeated plays. Whether listened to from start to finish as a cohesive work or visited track by track, "Joy" invites reflection and slow immersion rather than quick consumption.

Shrimper, the manufacturer and label behind this release, has been associated for many years with a DIY ethos and a strong focus on artistic freedom. Often working with small runs and carefully curated projects, Shrimper has built a reputation as a home for artists who value authenticity over gloss. Releases on the label frequently experiment with songwriting forms and recording approaches, creating a catalog that feels adventurous yet consistently human and approachable. With "Joy," Shrimper once again presents an album that fits this philosophy: modest in appearance, rich in substance, and clearly shaped by the personality of the artist.

Joy, the artist at the center of this CD, works in a subtle, introspective style that places emphasis on atmosphere and emotional nuance rather than grand gestures. The songs unfold slowly, using minimal arrangements to highlight voice, lyrics and tone, often balancing between melancholy and a quiet sense of hope. While specific chart positions or mainstream accolades are not documented here, Joy's strength lies in crafting songs that resonate deeply with listeners who appreciate honest, unvarnished expression. Through this release, Joy reinforces a reputation as a creator of intimate, inward-looking music that leaves space for the listener's own thoughts and feelings.
