Description:A Duty-Dance With Death by Children's Crusade, released 15 November 2024. This version of A Duty-Dance With Death comes as a 1xLP. -
Second release on Robert Pollard's new Splendid Research label is a vinyl & CD reissue of a 1984 demo cassette by Children's Crusade, post-punk teenage band of Guided By Voices' Doug Gillard. The Cleveland guitarist went on to record for Scat, Homestead and Restless Records with the bands Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, My Dad Is Dead, and Gem, before joining GBV (1996-2004), then Nada Surf (2010-2016), then rejoining GBV (2016-present), as well as playing on albums by Richard Buckner, Neko Case and others. 1980s Cleveland was a hotbed for indie rock, following in the Northern Ohio footsteps of Pere Ubu, The Dead Boys, The Styrenes, Mirrors and Devo. "Children's Crusade was a fleeting blotch on the wild, mid-80s Cleveland underground music scene, slowly seeping through like a drop of oil on the uniformly black jeans of that era - noticeable only after it settles, spreads, and you realize it won't come out in the wash."
All songs written by Doug Gillard and Fraser Sims Flippant Music, BMI Burning Theater Music Remixed by Doug Gillard & Travis Harrison at Serious Business, New York, NY Analog to Digital Restoration by Steve Rosenthal, MARS, New York, NY Originally recorded & engineered by Steve Simonovich at Star Track Recording, Elyria, Ohio, 1984
"Duty-dance With Death" on LP by Children's Crusade is an intense, atmospheric release that merges brooding post-punk energy with darkly melodic alternative rock. Built around driving bass lines, angular guitars and urgent vocals, the album creates a cinematic tension between raw emotion and carefully structured songwriting. The songs move between haunting slow-burn passages and cathartic, explosive peaks, giving the LP a strong narrative flow that invites full-length listening rather than just individual tracks. Lyrically, "Duty-dance With Death" circles themes of mortality, moral conflict and the search for meaning in a fractured world, turning personal struggles into stark, memorable imagery. This record is an ideal choice for listeners who appreciate emotionally charged guitar music with depth, atmosphere and a coherent album aesthetic.

Children's Crusade present themselves here as a band with a distinct artistic vision: tight ensemble playing, a strong sense for dynamics and hooks that stay with you long after the needle leaves the groove. Their sound feels rooted in classic indie and post-punk traditions while clearly aiming for a contemporary, timeless production. With "Duty-dance With Death", Children's Crusade consolidate their reputation as a serious, album-oriented band whose work rewards repeated, attentive listening and stands out in a crowded guitar-music landscape.

The LP format underscores the album's character: side A and side B are sequenced to reflect two emotional arcs, turning the act of flipping the record into part of the experience. Warm, detailed pressing and a carefully balanced mix bring out both the raw edges and the subtle nuances of the arrangements, making this edition especially appealing for collectors and vinyl enthusiasts who value sound depth and physical presentation.

Splendid, the manufacturer behind this release, focuses on presenting artistically ambitious titles with care and attention to detail. Their LP productions are known for solid pressing quality, thoughtfully designed packaging and a clear commitment to preserving the character of the original recordings. With "Duty-dance With Death", Splendid once again emphasizes their role as a label that supports distinctive, self-contained projects rather than interchangeable mainstream products, giving bands like Children's Crusade the space and framework to fully unfold their creative identity.
