Hünerberg, der an den Kraftwerk-Vorläufer The Organisation oder an Zeitgenossen wie Faust erinnert, setzt in seinen DIY-Kompositionen Flöte, Orgel, Bass und Ballon ein. Ã?ber Gillespies flinkem, pointillistischem Schlagzeugspiel (er spielt auch Klavier und Cembalo) setzt Hünerberg Flöte, Orgel, Bass und Luftballon ein (das ist kein Saxophon bei â??Cucumberâ??). Der verwirrende Opener â??Cro Magnon/Twoâ?? erinnert an den Kraftwerk-Vorläufer The Organisation oder an Zeitgenossen wie Faust. Es herrscht eine seltsame, trostlose Atmosphäre, fast so, als wäre die Luft aus einer Aufnahmesession herausgesaugt worden, die für einige Avantgarde-Jazz-Schwergewichte gebucht worden war. Anstelle von Impulse hätte Phase Murmur eigentlich für ESP-Disk erscheinen sollen.
Leider experimentierte das Duo in der relativen Leere des südwestlichen Ohio. Weit entfernt von geschäftigen Metropolen oder neugierigen Plattenfirmen war Phase Murmur eine echte DIY-Angelegenheit. Nicht nur, dass das Duo die LP selbst gepresst hat (die Stra�e hinunter bei Rite Record Productions in Cincinnati), auch das stimmungsvolle und geheimnisvolle Foto auf dem Cover stammt von Gillespie, während das Layout mit dem begleitenden Gedicht auf der Rückseite von Hünerberg zusammengestellt wurde. Auf Phase Murmur fand Hünerberg zum ersten Mal seine Stimme, und der Rest ist der Klang der Geschichte, der sich auf einer Tonbandmaschine abspielt.
