Made in the EUMarvin Gaye's "What's Going On" on CD is widely regarded as one of the most important soul albums of all time - a concept work that turned social consciousness into timeless music. Originally released on Motown in 1971, the album presents an intimate, cohesive song cycle that flows almost like a single continuous piece. With its fusion of smooth soul, jazz-inflected arrangements and subtly psychedelic touches, "What's Going On" addresses themes such as war, social injustice, spiritual searching and environmental concern, yet always remains warm, melodic and deeply human. Iconic tracks like the title song, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" combine elegant string and horn arrangements, intricate rhythms and Gaye's multi-tracked, call-and-response vocals to create a rich, immersive listening experience that still sounds contemporary decades later. On CD, the album's layered production gains extra clarity, allowing you to appreciate the detailed instrumentation, from the gentle bass lines and percussion grooves to the lush orchestration that wraps around Gaye's expressive voice.
Marvin Gaye was one of the defining voices of Motown and of soul music in general, bridging the gap between pop hitmaking and personal, socially relevant artistry. After early successes with songs like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" and duets with artists such as Tammi Terrell, Gaye evolved into a visionary album artist. "What's Going On" marked a turning point in his career and in popular music, proving that a Motown star could create a cohesive, message-driven album that was both commercially successful and artistically groundbreaking. The record became a critical and commercial triumph and is frequently ranked among the greatest albums in music history, influencing generations of R&B, soul, and pop artists with its emotional honesty and sophisticated production.
Motown, the label behind this release, is one of the most legendary names in popular music. Founded in Detroit, Motown created a distinctive sound that blended soul, pop, and R&B into concise, catchy songs that crossed racial and cultural boundaries in the 1960s and 1970s. Known for its rigorous artist development and top-tier in-house songwriters, producers and musicians, Motown launched and nurtured the careers of numerous major artists and shaped the sound of an era. A Motown CD like "What's Going On" stands for quality songwriting, polished yet soulful production and music that has proven its lasting impact across decades. | | | Producer: |
