 | | Description: | 2011 album from the Canadian Electronic musician and sound artist. Recorded in a church in Reykjavik, Iceland and using a pipe organ as the primary sound source, this piece is essentially a live recording. In reality, it exists in a nether world between captured live performance and meticulous studio work, melding the two approaches to sonic artifice as a unity. It is in parts a document of air circulating within a wooden room, and also a pagan work of physical resonance within a space once reserved for the hallowed breath of the divine.Written Winter 2010 in Montreal and Banff. Recorded July 21, 2010 at Fríkirkjan Church, Reykjavík, Iceland. Written for computer, pipe organ, synthesizer, piano, microphone and guitar amp feedback. Thanks to Ben, Paul, Lawrence, Aline, Valgeir & Greenhouse Studios, Reykjavík.

"Ravedeath, 1972" is a critically acclaimed CD by Canadian sound artist Tim Hecker, released by the independent label Kranky / Cargo. The album is a monumental work of experimental and ambient electronic music, marked by dense layers of distorted organ, shimmering noise, and slowly unfolding drones. Across its tracks, "Ravedeath, 1972" evokes a sense of decayed grandeur and crumbling architecture, as if sacred music had been recorded in a collapsing cathedral and then filtered through digital erosion. The compositions move between moments of overwhelming intensity and fragile calm, creating a deeply immersive and emotional listening experience that rewards focused, repeated plays.
The production on this CD emphasizes texture over melody: organs, feedback, and electronic processing meld into vast, sculpted soundscapes that blur the boundary between harmony and dissonance. Each piece flows organically into the next, giving the album a coherent narrative arc that feels more like a single, extended composition than a simple track collection. This makes "Ravedeath, 1972" especially appealing to listeners who appreciate atmospheric music that can function both as a deep, introspective journey on headphones and as a powerful, room-filling sonic environment.
Tim Hecker is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary ambient and experimental electronic music. Active since the late 1990s, he has built a reputation for transforming noise, distortion, and digital artifacts into works of striking beauty and emotional depth. His albums are frequently cited in year-end and decade-end lists by specialized music press, and he is often mentioned alongside the leading names in avant-garde and sound art for his innovative approach to texture and space in music. His work is appreciated by fans of ambient, drone, modern classical, and experimental sound design.
Kranky / Cargo, the manufacturer and label behind this release, is known for its carefully curated catalog of boundary-pushing music. Kranky has long been associated with high-quality ambient, drone, and experimental releases, championing artists who explore subtle, immersive, and unconventional sound worlds. Their partnership with Cargo ensures that these niche yet influential recordings reach discerning listeners around the world. "Ravedeath, 1972" fits perfectly into this tradition: an ambitious, artistically daring album presented with the attention to detail and long-term vision that have made Kranky / Cargo a respected name among adventurous music fans and collectors. | | | No. of tracks: |
