Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, later Le Sony'r Ra) is one of the most influential and singular figures in jazz history. Active from the 1950s until the early 1990s, he pioneered "Afrofuturism" in music, combining big-band jazz, free improvisation, electronics and cosmic philosophy. With his Arkestra he released dozens of albums on his own Saturn label and beyond, creating cult classics that later influenced generations of jazz, rock, electronic and experimental musicians. While he was often considered an underground artist in his lifetime, Sun Ra's recordings and performances are now widely recognized as milestones of avant-garde and spiritual jazz; albums such as "Space Is the Place" and "Lanquidity" are regarded as essential in any adventurous jazz collection, and "Sleeping Beauty" is often cited alongside them as one of his most accessible yet deeply atmospheric works.
