VIRGO

Virgo was founded in the late 1970s by three Italian musicians who shared a passion for complex and innovative music: keyboard player Massimo DiCicco, guitarist Mario Panciera, and drummer Roberto Giordani. They released their first album, self-titled Virgo, in 1981 on the Italian label Dischi Ricordi. The album featured seven instrumental tracks that showcased the band's virtuosic playing and their ability to blend classical, jazz, and rock influences into a distinctive sound. Despite the critical acclaim Virgo received for their debut album, the band struggled to find commercial success. Their second album, 1989's "Streets of Lhasa," was released on the German label ZYX and featured more vocal-driven songs. Still, it failed to make an impact, and the band went on a decade-long hiatus. Virgo returned in 1998 with a new lineup featuring keyboard player Claudio Simonetti, best known for his work in the horror movie soundtracks of Dario Argento. The band's third album, "The Human Puzzle," was released on Simonetti's own label, Daemonia Records, and featured guest appearances from the likes of Italian prog legends PFM and violinist extraordinaire David Cross (ex-King Crimson). The album continued Virgo's tradition of complex and adventurous music, with intricate arrangements, diverse rhythms, and a sense of adventure that explored different styles and moods. Since then, the band released several more albums, including "Virgo 3" in 2006 and "Virgo 4" in 2021. The latter featured a new lineup and a more modern and dynamic sound that mixed prog rock with electronic and metal influences. Despite their modest commercial success, Virgo remains an essential band in the Italian prog scene and a respected name among fans of adventurous and innovative music. Their extensive discography is a testament to the band's creativity and commitment to artistic excellence, and their music continues to inspire and challenge listeners around the world.
