When released on Halloween 1996, Frank Zappa Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa, A Memorial Tribute was considered to be an Audio Tombstone by the family. It features the three signature guitar pieces: "Black Napkins," "Zoot Allures" and "Watermelon In Easter Hay" in their original released form (remastered) with added live versions that predate the issued masters. Also included is "Merely A Blues In A: from Paris '74. A fitting "Memorial Tribute" indeedOfficial Release #66.

This release's aim was to explore Frank Zappa's self-professed 'signature' guitar pieces - "Black Napkins", "Zoot Allures" and "Watermelon in Easter Hay" - by juxapositioning alternate, early recordings of these tracks against the original album versions. "Merely a Blues In A" is, effectively, a previously unreleased track.

Track 3: Live Recording - Tokyo, Japan, 1976-02-05.
Track 4: Live Recording - Paris, France, 1974-09-27. Previously unreleased.

Track 6: Live recording - city and specific date unknown, January or February 1978.
Track 7: Originally released in 1979 on "[url=http://www.discogs.com/Frank-Zappa-Joes-Garage-Acts-II-III/master/36001]Joe's Garage, Acts 2 & 3[/url]", ending with an extra live-concert insert at the end with FZ saying "Good Night" as a final reminiscent to his death.
Mastered at UMRK, 1996.
Packaging: six-panel black imitation leather Digipak with a fake stick-on mustache; the silver letters are printed on brilliant embossed black. Includes a 12-page booklet.
First pressings don't have the stickered barcode.
There is no label company listed anywhere on the release. The Zappa website is shown on the release and Barking Pumpkin is listed as the label in the "official discography" entry for FZPFZ on that website. |
